Box707 Brigham City, UT 84302-A7A7 RE:Corrosion Investigation Report for Monitoring Well Screens ATK Launch Systems - Promontory Facility uTD00908 r 357 Dear Mr. Gooch: The Division of Solid and Haz ardous Waste has completed its review of ATK's report on the investigation ofcorrosion in monitoring well screens at the Promontory facility. The Division requested that ATK investigate this issue due to corosion of dedicated purrping systems that has been observed in the past. In addition, ATK no longer purges monitoring wells when collecting groundwater samples since they are now collected using Hydra Sleeve grormdwater sarnplers. Unobstructed flow of groundwater through well screens is important when using this sampling method to ensure that the samples collected are representative of groundwater conditions in the area ofthe well. Based on ATK's report and the accompanfng down-hole camera video, it appears that corrosion of well screens is primarily an issue with stainless steel screens in wells that are located in areas where groundwater is high in total dissolved solids. The screen for monitoring well F-3, for example, appears to be heavily corroded from approximately 88 feet to 104 feet, or 16 out of20 feet ofthe screen. It appears that groundwater flow tlrough the screen ofthis well may be obstructed by corrosion which could affect the sample quality. However, it is diffrcult to tell from the video the extent of clogging of the screen. This issue was discussed with ATK in our last monthly meeting. At that time, it was indicated that ATK was obtaining a different down-hole camera tlat could view the screen directly rather than straight down the hole. This should help determine the extent of clogging of well screens by corrosion. We also discussed investigating other wells that contain stainless steel screens and are located in areas with high TDS. 195 North 1950 West'Salt Lake City, UT Mailing Address: P.O. Box 144880 .
