Anderson Director September 14, 2011 RE: Groundwater Sample Results Dear Mr. Moulding: Larry A. Ellertson Brett Mickelson Brad Mertz GaryMossor Dennis Riding Dwayne Woolley Amanda Smith Scott T. Anderson Executive Secretary The Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste has received the analytical results for the groundwater samples that were collected on July 12, 2011 from your wells that are located North and Southwest of Thatcher Mountain in Box Elder County, Utah. The samples that were collected from both wells were analyzed for volatile organic compounds and perchlorate. Trichloroeth¥lene, a volatile organic compound, and perchlorate are the two primary contaminants that have been detected in groundwater at the ATK Launch Systems -Promontory facility which is located approximately five miles to the west of Thatcher Mountain. In summary, volatile organic compounds, including trichloroethylene were not detected in either of the water samples that were collected from the wells. Perchlorate was also not detected in either of the samples. The duplicate samples that were collected and analyzed by ATK showed the same results. No contaminants were detected. Based on these results, it appears that your two wells have not been impacted by the contaminants that exist at the ATK facility. Copies of the Division's laboratory reports are enclosed with this letter. The "Case Narratives" that are enclosed with the laboratory results explain the analytical methods that were used and the results of the quality control procedures that were conducted. There were no problems noted with the quality control procedures for the samples. To assist with the perchlorate analyses, both samples were tested for specific conductivity. Specific conductivity is a measure of water's ability to conduct electricity and is considered to be a good measure of the concentration of total dissolved solids (IDS) in the water. Analysis: Volatiles by GCIMS Sample #'s: 201103306-201103308 General Set Information: There are three samples in this reporting group for multiple analytes. Method Summary: This is a GC/MS method for the determination of volatile organic compounds in water according to SW-846 Guidelines. One 5-mL aliquot of sample was spiked with Internal Standards, Surrogates and purged with helium. The extract was · analyzed using an Agilent 5973 GC/MS system with electron impact ionizatit>n source and a quadrupole mass-filter detector. - Sample preparation: The saniple set was prepared using Method 5030B, purge and trap. Holding Times: All preparations and analysis holding times were met for all samples. Dilutions: All samples were analyzed with no dilution. Method and sample QC data: All samples met internal stanclard and surrogate recovery criteria. MS/MSDAnalysis: No matrix spiking for 8260B analytes were performed in this set. The 8260 analytes were detectable and quantifiable at the 25 ppb spike level. The spike for the LFB and LFBD at 25 ppbpassed. Instrument QC: The instrwi:tent was tuned with 25 ng BFB. A 5 point calibration curve was used for 8260 analytes. The standard concentrations were 1,5,10,25 and 50 ug/L. Calibration was checked with standards at 1 and 25 ppb.
