The sample results are summarized below and the laboratory reports are attached to this memo. The samples were collected at the Stangl trailer in order to validate the results of samples collected from this source in August of 2001. The results of these sampling events are summarized in the table below. The contaminants that were detected in 2001 were not detected in any of the samples that were collected in May of 2002, however, trichloroethene (TCE) was tentatively detected by Thiokol at a concentration of 3.1 ug/L. Thiokol's "Estimated Quantitation Limit" (EQL) for TCE is 5.0 ug/L. A concentration of 3.1 ug/L indicates that it appears TCE is present in the sample, but at an amount so low it is hard to quantify. Mike Stangl has been notified of these sample results. Thiokol will continue to monitor the springs upgradient of the Stangl trailer (Pipe and Shotgun Springs), and will be installing a new monitoring well in the area by January, 2003. The Stangl well should be sampled again in the Spring of 2003 (it is unknown at this time if the well was sampled in the Fall of 2002). The water supplied by the well at the trailer is not generally used for drinking water but is used for other domestic purposes. Without ingestion of the water as an exposure pathway, the levels of contaminants that have been tentatively identified do not present a risk at this time. Groundwater samples were collected at piezometer BC-2 in May, 2002 due to the inconsistent perchlorate results that were obtained in May and August of 2001. These results are summarized below: Perchlorate Results in ug/L, Piezometer Bi C-2 (Adams property) j Sampler May 2001 August 2001 May 2002 1 DSHW 8.2 86.1 <4 1 Thiokol 35 <2 3.8 1 These results are quite varied, but it appears that the high concentrations of contaminants that are observed nearby in well EW-6 have not been seen in the piezometer. It appears that VOCs have not impacted the piezometer. Thiokol is currently installing new monitoring wells down-gradient of this area, so more data will be available to assess this area in the near future. Samples were collected at well G-5 basically to just compare results from Thiokol's laboratory to the State Health laboratory results. The results that the two labs obtained, summarized below, are nearly identical: Well G-5 Groundwater Sample Results, May 2C 102 (ug/L) Sampler Perchlorate TCE 1,1,1-TCA 1,1-DCE PCE Fluorotri^ j chloromethane DSHW 10.2 43.0 16.0 24.0 1.3 6.6 1 Thiokol 11 43 16 19 <.3 5.8 1 The State Health laboratory reports are attached.
