Downs Departinent of Environmental Quality Division OF Solid AND Hazardous Waste P. O. Box 144880 Salt lake City, UT 84114-4880 Subject: Notification of Treatability Study at Thiokol Corporation's T-93 facility for 1.3 Propellant, EPA# UTD009081357 Dear Mr. Downs Thiokol Corporation is continuing to develop the technology to remove rocket motor propellant through cryogenic wash out techniques. The RD&D permit that was secured last year allows us to remove propellant from full scale 1.1 motors as part of this research. While research in this area is continuing in compliance with our permit, we desire to conduct similar studies with 1.3 materials. This letter is intended to inform you of our intent to conduct a treatability study to determine the safety aspects associated with the removal of class 1.3 propellants using the cryogenic process. The research with 1.3 material will be conducted under full compliance with 40 CFR 261.4(e) and (f) and will be performed at T-93. If you have any questions regarding this treatability study, please contact Gene Curtis at 863-4479. Sincerely (2' !<!ii3i';(V' ^^dfU^^^-y^^^ J. D.
