CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 PURPOSE
This report has been prepared to present geologic and hydrologic data obtained during
the installation of monitoring well X-5. It is intended to serve as a stand-alone document;
however, the reader is referred to the January 2008 (revised) Groundwater Flow and
Contaminant Transport Model Report for the ATK Promontory Facility (EarthFax Engineering,
2008) for general background information regarding (1) descriptions of faciiities at the
Promontory Facility, (2) regional geologic and groundwater conditions, (3) local geology and
groundwater hydrology, and (4) the local groundwater quality at the site.
This document is divided into four chapters, including this introduction. The methods
used to install and to test the monitoring well can be found in Chapter 2. Results are found in
Chapter 3, and Chapter 4 contains a list of references cited in this report.

CHAPTER 2
METHODS OF WELL CONSTRUCTION AND DATA COLLECTION
2.1 WELL LOCATION
The location of monitoring well X-5 is shown on Figure 1. This well is located on what is
referred to as Plant 3 at ATK's Promontory Facility. Plant 3 is found in the south-east portion of
the facility north of State of Utah West Highway 83.
2.2 WELL CONSTRUCTION
Well drilling and completion tasks were performed by Mike Zimmerman Well Service of
Magna, Utah. All rig operators were licensed by the Utah Division of Water Rights to drill water
wells in the State of Utah. Well drilling, completion, and associated activities were supervised
by ATK personnel and individuals from EarthFax Engineering, Inc. of Midvale, Utah. All
activities at the site were conducted in compliance with ATK health and safety requirements.
Monitoring well X-5 was installed by air-rotary drilling methods. This well was
constructed in accordance with guidelines previously employed by ATK at the facility. Appendix
A contains copies of the driller's daily logs.
2.3 HYDROGEOLOGIC DATA COLLECTION
During drilling operations, composite cuttings samples were collected at approximate 5-
foot intervals and as major lithologic changes occurred. Typical information logged from the
cuttings included color, hardness, reactivity to dilute hydrochloric acid, staining, grain size,
sorting, and rock classification. Appendix B contains a geologic log of materials encountered in
X-5 in addition to an as-built well construction diagram.

3.0 RESULTS OF WELL INSTALLATION AND TESTING
3.1 X-5 WELL COMPLETION
Monitoring well X-5 was drilled to a depth of 280 feet. An 8-inch diameter borehole was
drilled using air rotary techniques from the surface to a depth of 280 feet where it was
determined that the water table had been encountered and penetrated at least 20 feet.
The well consists of nominal 4.5-inch diameter schedule 80 PVC from the surface to a
depth of 260 feet, below which the well is constructed of 20 feet of factory slotted 0.010 slot,
4.5-inch diameter PVC screen to a depth of 280 feet. A gravel-pack consisting of 20-40 mesh
silica sand was placed around and to a depth of 10 feet above the screens, and 20 feet of 70-
mesh silica sand was placed immediately above the 20-40 mesh gravel pack and allowed to
settle overnight.
The annulus above the gravel-pack was sealed with bentonite grout from 230 to 2 feet
below ground surface. The surface to 2 feet below surface was filled with cement and covered
with an 8-inch diameter steel locking well cover with a cement pad.
3.2 GEOLOGY
The lithology at X-5 consists of Quaternary alluvium at the surface and limestone,
silty limestone, and minor shale beds from 15 to a depth of 280 feet. The well is most likely
completed in the lower limestone member of the Oquirrh Formation. The lower limestone
member consists of a fine- to medium-grained calcarenite quartzose (and less commonly
arkosic) sand which is intermixed with limey sand locally and in places forms calcareous
sandstone beds. Cherty limestone is common, as are coarse bioclastic beds containing crinoid
debris, bryozoans, fusulinids, corals, gastropods, and brachiopods (Miller et al., 1991).
3.3 HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTICS
ATK Launch Systems Monitoring Well X-5 Report
Promontory Utah March 1, 2008
To estimate the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer within the screened interval, a slug
injection test was conducted at X-5. A slug test is conducted by rapidly changing the water level
in a well or borehole by means of the injection or withdrawal of a body of known volume (a
"slug") into or from the water column, and monitoring the rate of water level recovery to the
static, pre-test level. When the slug is rapidly lowered into the water column, the water level
rises abruptly. Rapid withdrawal of the slug after the water level has fully recovered causes the
water level to drop abruptly.
Although it is recognized that the radius of influence of a slug test is smaller than that of
a long-term pumping test, slug tests are considered to provide adequate information about
hydraulic conditions when studies are not aimed at designing an exploitation program of the
aquifer (Freeze and Cherry, 1979). Slug injection and slug withdrawal tests produce similar
results if performed under similar field conditions, and if a sufficient length of time is allowed to
achieve maximum recovery ofthe water level. Slug test results can be found in Appendix D.
3.4 FIELD PROCEDURES
3.4.1 Water Level and Total Depth Measurements
An electric water level indicator was used to measure the static water level and total
depth of the completed monitoring well. The measurements were made relative to the top of the
well cover (approximately 1 foot above ground level). These values were used to determine the
saturated thickness of the zone to be tested.
The pre-test static water level of the subject aquifer was measured with an electric water
level indicator. A transducer was placed at a known depth in the well, and the water column
height measured by the transducer was added to this known depth to approximate the water
level.
3.4.2 Slug Tests in Completed Wells
ATK Launch Systems Monitoring Well X-5 Report
Promontory Utah March 1, 2008
A pressure transducer with a maximum operating pressure of 15 pounds per square inch
(34.6 feet of water) was used to measure water levels during the slug test in the completed and
developed well. After pre-test measurements and programming of the micro logger, the
pressure transducer was lowered into the water to a depth that was approximately 12 feet below
the static water level. The slug was then rapidly lowered into the water column in the monitoring
well and data were recorded at 1 second intervals.
3.5 INTERPRETATION PROCEDURES
Data recorded on the data-storage module in the field were transferred to a computer by
means of a model SMI92 storage module and serial I/O card and associated PC208 software
package, both developed by Campbell Scientific. This data was stored as a comma-delineated
ASCII data file. The contents of the data file were subsequently transferred to an analytical
program (AQTESOLV™), which allows rapid, graphical representation and log-linear regression
analysis of test data.
The computer software AQTESOLV PRO™ 4.0 (Duffield 2006) was used to evaluate the
slug test data. The method of Bouwer and Rice (1989), which determines hydraulic conductivity
for wells, which penetrate unconfined aquifers, is available in the AQTESOLV PRO™ software,
and was used to estimate the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer.
Values of time and actual water-level displacement due to injection or withdrawal of the
slug are displayed on a semi-logarithmic plot (i.e., water-level displacement is represented on a
logarithmic y-axis and time is represented on an arithmetic x-axis). The hydraulic conductivity
("K") is estimated from the equation:
^_r/ln(/;,//-Jl^^;;„ (3-1)
2L t y,
where:
yo = initial drawdown or residual drawdown in well due to instantaneous
removal or injection of the slug from the well (ft)
y, = drawdown in well at time t (ft)
L = length of well screen (ft)
rc = radius of well casing (ft)

HR /rj = (—— —r'

(3-2)
where:
dimensionless parameter which is a function of L/rw (see Equation 3-1).
According to Bouwer and Rice (1989), Equation (3-1) allows the hydraulic conductivity to
be calculated from the water-level change in the well. Because the hydraulic conductivity,
casing radius, well radius, the radius over which head loss occurs, and the screen length are
constants, (1/t) In yjyi must also be a constant. Thus, the time/drawdown data should
approximate a straight line if plotted in terms of In yo versus t. The quantity (1/t) In yo/yt in
Equation (3-1) is obtained from the first straight-line segment drawn through the field data.
The AQTESOLV PRO™ software program prompts the user to supply values of well
casing radius, drill hole radius, saturated aquifer thickness, well screen length, and static height
of water in the well. Time and water-level data are read into the software program in the form of
ASCII data files, which are downloaded from the field data-logger.
Once the field data and constants are entered, the AQTESOLV PRO™ software
generates semi-log plots of the data and automatically fits a straight line to the data according to
user-defined weighting. If the entire range of field data do not approximate a straight line, only
those early data which form a valid straight-line segment are weighted by the user such that the
software produces the desired straight line approximation through the valid part ofthe data set.
The straight-line fit produced by AQTESOLV PRO™ automatically determines the value
of yo (y-intercept) and an arbitrary value of yt at time t to solve Equation (3-1). Based on user-
ATK Launch Systems Monitoring Well X-5 Report
Promontory Utah March 1, 2008
defined values of screen length and drill hole radius, the software determines the value of C to
evaluate Re in Equation (3-2).
The AQTESOLV PRO™ software generates the straight-line approximation by means of
a nonlinear weighted least-squares parameter estimation technique, i.e., the Gauss-Newton
linearization method. The estimation technique minimizes the difference between observed and
estimated values through iterative solution of the system of linearized equations until
convergence is achieved. To ensure the fit of the straight line, the software prints out the values
of actual water levels, calculated water levels, and residual values (the difference between the
actual and calculated water levels) derived by the parameter estimation technique. Additionally,
the statistical values of mean, standard deviation, and variance are provided for the weighted
residuals. These statistics indicate the goodness-of-fit of the straight line generated by the
estimation technique.
3.6 AQUIFER TEST DATA AND RESULTS
Slug test plots for the wells tested are presented in Appendix C. Included with the
time/drawdown plots are printouts of well constants and field data used to estimate values of
hydraulic conductivity. Statistical values of mean, standard deviation, and variance also are
provided for the weighted residuals. The hydraulic conductivity value was taken directly from
the AQTESOLV PRO™ plot. The calculated hydraulic conductivity for well X-5 is 1.315 ft/day.
3.7 ANALYTICAL RESULTS
Following the completion of monitoring well X-5, a dedicated pumping system was
installed in the well and the well was subsequently sampled. The water collected during
sampling was submitted to the onsite ATK analytical laboratory for analyses of among other
constituents, perchlorate and volatile organic compounds. No perchlorate or VOC's were
detected for the samples from this well.
3.8 DEDICATED PUMPING SYSTEMS
ATK Launch Systems Monitoring Well X-5 Report
Promontory Utah March 1, 2008
3.8 DEDICATED PUMPING SYSTEMS
Following completion and development of the well, a dedicated pumping system was
installed to facilitate periodic groundwater sampling. The dedicated systems consist of a
Grundfos Redi-flo system (4-inch diameter) with 1-inch diameter discharge pipe to the surface.
The well was installed with a surface seal through which access ports are provided for water
level indicators, sample tubes, and hook-up for electrical connections.
Upon completion of the well and placement of the dedicated pumping systems, the well
was surveyed for elevation and location. The top of casing was determined to be 4491.31 feet
above mean sea level (amsl) at X-5 and located N472353.9 and El 764403.6 in the State Plane
coordinate system.
3.9 MODEL UPDATE
Monitoring well X-5 has been reviewed for incorporated in the Groundwater Flow and
Contaminant Transport Model. The contact elevations for layers in the model were checked
against the logged intervals from the well and found to be accurate. Therefore, no change will
be made to the model layers. Additionally, since hydraulic conductivity values are assigned by
region and are an average of a range of values from wells within the area, no change to the flow
model will be made based on the calculated hydraulic conductivity for well X-5 as it is within the
range values used to calculate the hydraulic conductivity for the southeast portion of the model.
No detections of volatile organics or perchlorate were found at the well and hence, no
modifications to the contaminant transport model will be made. If future sampling events yield
information that shows contamination at well X-5, the model will be updated with these
concentrations.

Data Reporting Qualifiers
U Indicates that the analyte was not detected, or the analyte was detected but
was below the MDL.
B This flag is used when an analyte is found in the blank as well as the sample.
Indicates an extimated value. This flag is used either when estimating a concentration
for tentatively identified compounds or when the data indicated the presence of a
compound that meets the identification criteria but the result is less than the
EQL (e.g. 3 J with an EQL of 10).
MDL Method Detection Limit: The minimum concentration of a substance that can be
confidently measured and reported. The laboratory has demonstrated that the
MDL can be achieved in a laboratory reagent blank, but does not guarantee it
can be achieved in all sample matrices.
EQL Estimated Quantitation Limit: The EQL generally is 5 to 10 times the MDL. For
many analytes the EQL is selected as the value of the lowest standard in the
calibration curve.
Dilution Dilution Factor: The prepared sample was diluted by this factor because the
Factor sample was too concentrated or due to other interferences in the sample matrix.
Any dilution factor causes a corresponding increase in the MDL and EQL.
