RE: Groundwater Sample Results
Dear Mr. Adams:
The Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste (the Division) has received the analytical results for the groundwater samples that were collected from wells on your property near the ATK
Thiokol – Promontory (Thiokol) facility. Five samples were collected from four different sources on April 12, 2005. The sample numbers and locations are described below:
Adams #1 – collected from the “south well” located west of Blue Creek near the Golden Spike road.
Adams #2 – collected from the well located next to the historic railroad grade, just west of the Thiokol facility.
Adams #3 – collected from the water spigot outside the Adams house.
Adams #4 – duplicate of Adams #3 sample.
Adams #5 – collected from the “north well” located north of Engineer Mountain.
These samples were submitted to the Utah Department of Health, Division of Laboratory Services for analysis of volatile organic compounds and perchlorate. These analytical tests were
selected in order to determine if the contaminants that have been detected in groundwater at the Thiokol facility have impacted the sources described above. The results of the analytical
tests are summarized in the table below.
Adams Wells Sample Results
Constituent (ug/L) Adams #1 Adams #2 Adams #3 Adams #4 Adams #5 Trichloroethene 6.2 6.3 <1.0 <1.0 <1.0 Perchlorate <8.0 6.6 J <4.0 <4.0 <4.0
As shown above, trichloroethene (or TCE) was detected at low levels in the Adams #1 and Adams #2 samples. These results are the only detection of volatile organic compounds in the samples
that were collected. Perchlorate was detected at a low level in the Adams #2 sample only. The “J” in the table next to the number 6.6 indicates that the level detected was above the
detection limit, but below the quantitation limit. In other words, it appears that perchlorate was present in the sample, but at a level low enough to make the concentration hard to
determine. TCE and perchlorate are the two primary contaminants that have been observed at the Thiokol facility. No contaminants were detected in samples Adams #3, Adams #4, or Adams
#5.
Currently, drinking water standards for TCE and perchlorate are 5.0 ug/L and 24 ug/L respectively. Based on these results, the levels of TCE detected in the Adams #1 and Adams #2 are
slightly above the drinking water standard, and the level of perchlorate that was detected in the Adams #2 sample is below the standard. The drinking water standards are for the exposure
pathway of water ingestion only.
At this time, it is unknown what concentrations of the contaminants would be a concern for irrigation or watering cattle. However, Thiokol has begun work on a risk assessment that will
evaluate the human health risk associated with irrigating and watering cattle with contaminated groundwater. The results of the risk assessment should be available sometime next year.
Thiokol will be required to take corrective action for contaminated groundwater based on the results of the risk assessment. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff Vandel at
