Dear Mr. Downs
Subject: Submittal of Pilot Workplan for Perchlorate Remediation, ATK Thiokol
Propulsion - Promontory, UTD009081357
ATK Thiokol Inc., is proposing to conduct a pilot scale test of a new technology for the
biological reduction and remediation of perchlorate contamination in groundwater at our
Promontory Plantsite. Enclosed is a work plan which details this pilot scale project, prepared
by Kleinfelder, Inc. We propose to sparge ethyl acetate gas in a nitrogen carrier into the
contaminated aquifer to act as an organic carbon source to promote reduction of perchlorate to
carbon dioxide and chloride. If successful, this technology may promote substantial cost
savings over other biological remediation methods due to reduced infrastructure requirements,
and lower energy costs. A report detailing the results of the pilot plant activities will be
submitted to the Division following project completion. We appreciate the timely review of
this work plan by the Division, so work might commence this Summer.
If you have questions or need additional information, please call Chris Busch at 801 251 -
3562 or John Holladay at 435 863-6895.
Sincerely
Paul V. Hancock, Manager
