Trott Industrial Safety and Hygiene and Hazardous Waste TRICHLOROETHYLENE VAPORS IN M-SdSTPFT HAND DEl^RED MAR 3 1 2003 Industrial Hygiene provided sampling of Trichloroethylene vapors in the pit at the north end of the M-508 high bay. Area samples from the bottom of the pit were collected during a day shift. This sampling indicates that there is some Trichloroethylene vapor percolating through the ground and finding its way through the concrete of the pit. No engineering or administrative changes are recommendations by Industrial Hygiene as a result of this sampling. Backqround and Studv Environmental Services requested Industrial Hygiene to monitor for Trichloroethylene at the lowest point of M-508. A chlorinated solvent plume was determined to be under the facility, and it was hoped the air sampling would provide a handle on the scope of the contamination. The logical choice for air sampling was at the bottom of the pit at the north end of the M-508 high bay. Two calibrated sampling pumps and activated charcoal sorbent tubes were used to collect the air samples. The two pumps were used to collect concurrent samples. Exposure Limit Trichloroethylene has an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 8- hour (or 480-minute) Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 50 parts per million (ppm). These samples were not taken to ascertain occupational exposure limit Recommendations These levels of Trichloroethylene do not warrant any further attention from Industrial Hygiene at this time. Employees are not routinely asked to descend into the pit where the samples were collected. No engineering or administrative changes are recommended as a result of sampling.
