Box 144880 Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-4880 Dear Mr. Downs ATTENTION: Jeff Vandel Thiokol Propulsion Corp. P.O. Box 707 Brigham City, UT 84302-0707 Tel 435 863-3511 Fax 435 863-2234 HAND DELIVERED APR 2 5 2003 Utah Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste Subject: Follow up to March 4, 2003 meeting with DSHW to discuss the DSHW letter dated January 22, 2003 with the topic "Uptake of Perchlorate by Plants Adjacent to Contaminated Springs at ATK Thiokol Propulsion - Promontory, EPA ID #UTD009081357". A concem was raised by the DSHW related to the potential exposure pathway of perchlorate to humans through the consumption of cattle exposed to environmental levels of perchlorate. The DSHW asked ATK Thiokol Propulsion to investigate this in the March 4, 2003 meeting. ATK Thiokol Propulsion has reviewed documentation and talked with toxicologists regarding this issue. Attached is a report on the findings ofthis review. Based on the current understanding of perchlorate phamacokinetics, actual cattle management practices and conservative calculations, Thiokol concludes that the cattle to human exposure route is a very low probability or concem. If you have any questions regarding this report, please direct them to myself at (435) 863-3344. Sincerely ^^4^ V 4»-Vf(5 U^ Paul V. Hancock, Manager Environmental Remediation
