Perchlorate is used as an oxidizer in the manufacture of solid propellants, and has been released into the environment throughout the country. A fact sheet on the history and effects of perchlorate is enclosed. Based on groundwater flow and your source locations we request that you collect a perchlorate sample for the following sources in your system: Maple Spring, Sandall Well, Well #3A, Well #9, Toombs Well #11, Well #12, Blue Creek Well, Howell Well #2 The Division of Drinking Water will pay for the cost ofthese samples. The procedures for sampling, and the sample bottles are enclosed. For scheduling reasons please submit your samples to the State Health Laboratory during the week of June 28. The results ofthe samples will be forwarded to you as soon as they are available from the laboratory. We are working closely with EPA and the Interagency Perchlorate Steering Committee to determine the magnitude ofthe problem, establish a national health advisory, and investigate possible remedial options. The results ofthis perchlorate sampling will help us to determine the extent of contamination in Utah, and contribute to the national effort to understand the occurrence of perchlorate. We appreciate your cooperation in completion ofthis study. Ifyou have any questions or ifthe sources we have asked to be sampled are not in use, please contact me at 801-536-4467.
