Downs, Additional Information Request for Temporary Authorization #MOD98.00729 (EPA ID # UTD009081357) Mr. Jeff Vandel requested additional infonnation on the Sprint Demil Program for which the Temporary Authorization was issued. This request came via e-mail on July 20, 1998. Each question is answered below. 1. Identify all ofthe hazardous components ofthe Sprint Rockets (each unit contains the followihg) : a. lea. r' stage motor containiiig 3,870 lbs of 1.1 solid propellant, D003 lea. 2"*^ stage motor containing 1,002 lbs of 1.1 solid propellant, D003 2ea gas generators containing < 11 lbs each of solid explosive, D003 8ea initiators/squibs containing < 1 lbs each of solid explosive, D003 lea linear shaped charge containing < 0.5 lbs of solid explosive, D003 Freon - RCRA Non-hazardous liquid Hydraulic oil - RCRA Non-hazardous liquid b. c. d. e. f. g- A total of 49 units will be disposed during this program which should be completed by December 31, 1998. 2. Describe how each component will be managed. The miscellaneous items listed above will be removed from the first and second stage motors. Items a-e will be placed in grounded conductive containers and properly labeled. The containers will then be transported to the Bum Grounds for open buming. The non-reactive ash will then be placed in our permitted landfill. The first and second stage rnotors will be placed in specially designed holding fixtures and fired at the Bum Grounds. The non-hazardous case will then be placed in our permitted landfill foi" disposal. 3. Are any ofthe hazardous wastes liquids ? No, all liquids associated with these motors are non-hazardous and will be managed appropriately. 4. How many motors does Thiokol expect to disassemble by the time the Temporary Authorization expires on September 14, 1998 ? We anticipate completing approximately 12 motors by the September 14 date, and would need an extension to take us through the end ofthe program.
