RE: The proposed manageinent of SWMUs #665 and #234
Dear Mr. Walker:
The Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste (the Division) has reviewed your proposals for the cleanup of
Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) #665 and #234. It is understood that the locations of the SWMUs
interfere with Thiokol's plans for additions to nearby buildings. Due to the circumstances, the Division is open
to regarding the cleanup actions as interim measures. Thiokol's recommendation for no further action,
additional investigation, or corrective action of the SWMUs could then be made once the RCRA Facility
Investigation (RFI) is complete.
Please be advised that a Final Interim Measures Report will be required at the conclusion of the cleanup
actions at the SWMUs. For SWMU #665 this would simply consist of a notification of the completion of the
concrete pad. For SWMU #234 the report should include the results of the confirmation samples, sampling
locations, the amount of soil excavated, disposal of the soil, and other pertinent information. If residual
contamination above background levels is left in place, a risk assessment, in accordance with R315-101, will
be required.
Thiokol's proposals for the cleanup of SWMUs #665 and #234 are hereby approved as interim measures. If
