Jeff Vandel, Project Lead F:\SHW\SUPPORT\TSUMNER\WP\PUBUC\MASSMAILFRM NOTICE On June 15, 1994 the Utah Solid and Hazardous Waste Control Board issued a Utah Hazardous Waste Research, Development, and Demonstration (RD&D) Permit to Thiokol Corporation (the Permittee) for the storage and treatment of solid rocket motors at their facility located in Box Elder County, Utah. This permit allowed the Permittee to operate this facility for one year upon issuance ofthe permit. Thiokol Corporation has renewed this RD&D Permit twice since it was issued. The Utah Hazardous Waste Management Rules allow for a maximum of three renewals for RD&D Permits. Each renewal is issued for a period of one year. Thiokol has submitted a request to renew their permit for an additional year beginning on June 23, 1997. The Permittee's application has been reviewed by the Division ofSolid and Hazardous Waste and found to be acceptable. The Utah Solid and Hazardous Waste Act requires a public comment period prior to approval of a permit by the Utah Solid and Hazardous Waste Control Board. The current rules provide the general public an opportunity to be notified and to participate in the permit process. All conditions of the permit are subject to the public comment period and hearing. The public comment period will commence on May 14, 1997 when the public notice is published in the Box Elder News Joumal. The Herald Joumal. Salt Lake Tribune, and the Deseret News, and will end on June 16, 1997 at 5:00 p.m. MST. A public information jfTieeting will be held the afternoon of May 22, 1997 at 2:00 p.ra in the auditorium at the Brigham City Library located at 26 East Forest, Brigham City, Utah. A public hearing has been scheduled for the aftemoon of June 11, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the Brigham City Library located at 26 East Forest, Brigham City, Utah.
