Box 144880 Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-4880 Dear Mr. Downs SUBJECT: Thiokol 1995 Treatability Study Report The 1995 Treatability Study report for Thiokol Corporation is included with this letter. The report was prepared to meet the requirements in 40 CFR 261.4 (f) (9). Questions on this report should be addressed to Paul Hancock at 863-3344. A. K. BOX 689, BRIGHAM CITY, UTAH 84302-0689 2.0 NUMBER AND TYPES OF STUDIES CONDUCTED IN 1995 One study was conducted. This was a Propellant Demil study related to the T-93 RD&D permit. Reference TreatabiUty Study Notification letters sent to UDEQ August 10, 1993, V300-FY94-L014 and V300-FY94-L092 dated February 15, 1994. (The latter letter specifically references the cryogenic washout study). This study involved testing 1.3 propellant in a cutting processes using liquid nitrogen. Propellant was placed in a fixture and slices were cut off using a liquid nitrogen knife. Another study, for which the notification letter was sent to DEQ on the 5 April 1995, was related to the removal and deactivation of propellant from a waste rocket motor at M-705. The U. S. Air Force decided not to fund this project, therefore, no test was conducted. 3.0 NAME, ADDRESS, AND EPA NUMBER FOR PERSONS FOR WHOM STUDY IS BEING CONDUCED. Same as above (Thiokol Corporation UTD009081357) 4.0 TOTAL QUANTITY IN STORAGE EACH DAY In most cases a small amount of propellant, specifically produced for the tests, was taken to the T-93 test facility each day testing was to be done. The entire amount of propellant was typically cut up in the testing and may be removed the following day or removed the same day and replaced with a new sample. Some of the test residue was stored for further engineering studies. Attached is the treatability study log sheet showing the amounts of propellant stored each day. 5.0 THE QUANTITY AND TYPES OF WASTE SUBJECTED TO TREATABILITY STUDIES The total quantity of waste used in the treatability study was 3.2 Kg. of 1.3 rocket propellant. 6.0 WHEN STUDY WAS CONDUCTED July 27, 1995 - December 6, 1995 7.0 FINAL DISPOSITION OF MATERIAL TREATED AND LEFTOVER SAMPLE Some ofthe material was sent to the Thiokol M-136 Buming Grounds for final disposal and treatment for the D003 hazard. Some propellant ignited during the tests, and some treated residue has been stored for further evaluation. 8.0 TREATABILITY STUDIES TO BE CONDUCTED IN 1996 The T-93 study described above will continue.
