Box 144880 Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-4880 Dear Mr. Downs SUBJECT: Thiokol 1994 Treatability Study Report The Thiokol Yearly Treatability Report for 1994 is enclosed for your information. One treatability study was conducted during the year, and one is anticipated as stated in the report. If you have any questions, please contact Paul Hancock at (801) 863-9548. Sincerel A. K. Thiokol Corporation UTD009081357 P.O. BOX 689, BRIGHAM CITY, UTAH 84302-0689 2.0 NUMBER AND TYPES OF STUDIES CONDUCTED IN 1994 One study was conducted. This was a Propellant Demil smdy related to the T-93 RD&D permit. Reference Treatability Smdy Notification letters sent to UDEQ August 10, 1993, V300-FY94-L014 and V300-FY94-L092 dated Febmary 15, 1994. (The latter letter specifically references the cryogenic washout study). This smdy involved testing propellant in a cutting processes using liquid nitrogen. Propellant was placed in a fixmre and slices were cut off using a liquid nitrogen knife. When the cutting was completed the D003 hazard still remained. Propellant Material was collected and sent to M-136 for open buming. 3.0 NAME, ADDRESS, AND EPA NUMBER FOR PERSONS FOR WHOM STUDY IS BEING CONDUCED. Same as above (Thiokol Corporation UTD009081357) 4.0 TOTAL QUANTITY IN STORAGE EACH DAY In most cases a small amount of propellant, specifically produced for the tests, was taken to the T-93 test facility each day testing was to be done. The entire amount of propellant was typically cut up in the testing and removed the following day or removed the same day and replaced with a new sample. Attached is the treatability study log sheet showing the amounts of propellant stored each day. 5.0 WHEN STUDY WAS CONDUCTED July 7, 1994 - December 15, 1994 6.0 FINAL DISPOSITION OF MATERIAL TREATED AND LEFTOVER SAMPLE The material was sent to the Thiokol M-136 Buming Grounds for final disposal and treatment for the D003 hazard. % 7.0 TREATABILITY STUDIES TO BE CONDUCTED IN 1995 A study to be conducted at M-705 involves testing a new technique for neutralizing energetic materials (propellants are macerated to remove reactive components). The notification of this smdy was sent to UDEQ on the 5 of April 1995, V300-FY95-L110. The amount of waste to be used in this smdy will be < 1,000 Kg.
