Downs, Executive Secretary- Utah Solid and Hazardous Waste Control Board 288 North 1460 West P.O. Box-144880 Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-4880 Dear Mr. Downs ATTENTION : Otis Willoughby SUBJECT: Request for Extension of Time to Complete Closure On 20 June 1995, the 180 day closure period for the Closure of M-39, M-114, and M-636 Photographic Waste Sites will expire. During this closure period, Thiokol has investigated several options for reclaiming the silver from the soils at these sites. We have met to discuss these options with representatives of the Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste and the Division of Water Quality to- ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Following this extensive investigation, Thiokol has concluded that transporting the soils contaminated with silver to Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, Inc. is the preferred option. Thiokol is actively negotiating the terms and conditions of the contract for this closure. Thiokol anticipates a final agreement to be reached in early June. The extensive rainfall has delayed activity at the sites making it difficult to meet the original schedule. Thiokol Corporation requests a 90 day extension of time from the Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste to complete closure activities. Your consideration of this time extension request is appreciated. If you have any questions in this matter, please contact me at (801) 863-8406, or Frank Walker at (801) 863- 5390. sincerely, J. R. Whimpey, Manager Environmental Services
