COMMENTS: *The excavations were backfilled with materials which were measured
at the source showing that the Ra-226 concentrations are in the range of
normal background. Other surface areas were verified on the basis of gamma
exposure rates which do not exceed 30-percent above normal background.

REPORT OF RADIOLOGICAL SURVEY AT DOE ID NUMBER MS-09013-BK
1.0 INTRODUCTION
A radiological screening survey of DOE ID number MS-09013-BK was conducted by Chem-Nuclear Geotech,
Inc. This survey was conducted using methods, as defined in the Vicinity Properties Management and
Implementation Manual, UMTRA-DOE/AL-050601 (March 1988), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
Guidelines for Residual Radioactive Material at Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP),
Revision 2, March 1987, and the Chem-Nuclear Geotech, Inc., Field Assessments Procedures Manual.
In order to simplify and expedite the identification and removal of mill tailings from Monu'cello properties,
the DOE is using a "block" concept for the inclusion surveys and for the cleanup work. All of the properties
in a city block that had not been previously assessed were surveyed sequentially to ensure the properties with
contamination in excess of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards were identified in a timely
and cost effective manner.
The radiological survey of this block included gamma scans of the entire ground surface (exterior and interior),
samples of exterior soil, and evaluation of historical data when present An assessment was also performed
on this block to determine the aerial and vertical extent of the contamination. The results are shown in the
Appendix A.

The exterior background gamma exposure rate is 15 uR/h; the interior background gamma exposure rate for
the multi-level brick building is 15 uR/h. Gamma exposure rates are shown in Figure 1, Appendix A.
No exterior elevated gamma exposure rates were found; however, background soil samples were collected at
Location Numbers 4, 5, 6, and 9 (Figure 1, Appendix A). The results of the soil samples are shown in
Table lb, Appendix A.
DOE ID Number MS-00372 Site contains radiation levels which DO NOT EXCEED the
DOE guidelines below:
Recommend: Exclusion
Exterior gamma exposure rate is less than the acceptable
difference or less than 20% above background averaged over
100 m2.
Radium-226 is less than 5.0 pCi/g above background in the
surface 15-cm soil layer averaged over 100 m2.

The exterior background gamma exposure rate is 15 tiR/h; the interior background gamma exposure rate for
the two-story block building is 14 \<R/h. Two regions of exterior elevated gamma exposure rates were found
and labeled Regions 1 and 2 (Figure 1, Appendix A).
The soil samples collected from Regions 1 and 2 (Location Numbers 13, 14, and 15, Figure 1, Appendix A)
yielded net area-weighted average radium-226 concentrations of less than 1.0 pCi/g. This value is less than
the EPA guidelines of 5.0 pCi/g above background for surface soil. The results of the soil samples are shown
in Table Id, Appendix A.
