The sample was collected to evaluate the impact of the operation of the former Monticello mill on water quality. Water quality restoration is being addressed by DOE-LM as Operable Unit (OU) III of the MMTS, in coordination with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Utah Department of Environmental Quality. The surface water sampling site on your property is known as the Sorenson location. A water sample is collected at that location from Montezuma Creek twice yearly, typically in April and October. Neither of the monitoring wells that are located on your property (wells 95-03 and 95-04) was sampled in April 2015, in accordance with the current monitoring schedule. A map showing the OU III groundwater and surface water monitoring locations is enclosed. Table 1 presents the April 2015 contaminants of concern results for the Sorenson location. These results indicate that selenium and uranium exceeded the respective water quality protection standard at concentrations that are consistent with historical results. Selenium and uranium contamination in Montezuma Creek at this location occurs from the local discharge of contaminated groundwater to the creek. There are no regulatory or administrative restrictions that affect the use of water in Montezuma Creek at present concentrations. Table 1. Contaminants of Concern and Surface Water Result; Sorenson Location, April 2015 Contaminant of Concern Water Quality Protection Standard (pg/L)1 April 2015 Result (pg/L) Arsenic 10 0.31 Nitrate (as nitrogen) 4,000 10 Selenium 7.2 Uranium 44 170 One microgram per liter (pg/L) is equivalent to one part contaminant per billion parts water (the mass of one liter of water is one billion micrograms). SCANNED ® Mr. Clayton Reed Young -2-August 11,2015 The most recent annual groundwater report (Monticello Mill Tailings Site Operable Unit III Annual Groundwater Report May 2013 Through April 2014) provides additional information related to OU III remedial actions and water quality monitoring. The report is available upon request or by Internet access at httpV/ww^w.lm.doe.gov/Monticello/Documents.aspx. Please call me at (970) 248-6707 if you have any questions.
