On June 19, 2024, Diamond Valley Acres Water Co. collected water samples from the distribution system, which came back as total coliform positive and/or E. coli positive. Last month E. coli bacteria were detected in the upper pressure zone, so it was determined for this month’s sampling that parallel samples would be taken, and the samples taken for analysis to two separate labs. One of the labs reported the presence of E. coli in the distribution system, while the other lab reported the samples as Total Coliform (TC) and E. coli absent. This triggered mandatory repeat sampling which was done on June 20, 2024. The repeat sampling process required us to turn in both distribution and source samples (8 total samples). The E. coli bacteria were reported as absent in the repeat samples; however, some of the samples were positive for total coliform. According to the rule (R309-211-9(1)(b)) if the repeat samples are found to be Total Coliform positive (after a routine sample has tested positive for E. coli)itconfirmsE. coli. One of the Total Coliform positive samples was collected from the Whitaker Well. Since the source was Total Coliform positive, we assume that is where the Total Coliform bacteria came from.  What is being done? We have turned off the Whitaker Well and will be chlorinating and sampling the distribution system for the next several days to restore safe drinking water. We will be holding a meeting on Saturday June 22, at 7:00pm in the water company building (at the park) to answer any questions you may have. We will have bottled water there for you to take home to drink. What should the consumer do?  DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems.   The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.   For more information, please contact John Cazier at (435)705-0017 General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791 Division website: drinkingwater.utah.gov. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses).
