In accordance with R309-215-6(2)(a), additional monitoring requirements have been assigned to this facility (TP004) for the contaminants for which the treatment process has been installed. The new monitoring requirements for this treatment plant are given below. These requirements will remain in place for six months. If after six months the results demonstrate effective removal of the contaminants of concern, monitoring requirements may be reduced from monthly to quarterly sampling. The next samples will be due sometime between 09/01/2023-09/30/2023. Recommendations It is the Division’s understanding that Canyonlands NP – Needles District HQ has occasionally experienced discolored water throughout the system. Based on this the Division has the following recommendations: 1) When monitoring the treated water for iron, manganese, and turbidity, also monitor the Cave Springs Well (WS004) before treatment for iron, manganese, and turbidity. This additional monitoring will provide information on the effectiveness of the treatment process and could assist in optimizing the treatment. 2) When a discolored water complaint is received, take the following samples: a. Iron, manganese, turbidity, chlorine residual, and Langlier index at the site experiencing discolored water. b. Iron, manganese and turbidity of the treated water. Flushing is also recommended to clear up the colored water. There are handheld analyzers available from companies like Hach that would allow for analysis of iron and manganese on site, as well as turbidity. These kits would allow for quicker response to these issues and for more frequent confirmation of the treatment process performance. Thank you for your efforts in maintaining a safe drinking water system. If you have questions concerning your sampling requirements, please contact David Kruse at 385-566-7789 (dbkruse@utah.gov).
