RE: Compliance Evaluation Inspections
Kennecott Tailings, Smelter and Tire Monofill Landfills Dear Mr. Evans: The Kennecott Class III Tailings and Smelter landfills were inspected by representative of the Division
of Waste Management and Radiation Control on June 28, 2018. The landfills are well operated. Access
to all sites is controlled, fencing and signs are intact, and incoming waste is documented on Landfill Manifest forms. At the Tailings landfill, waste is pushed to the edge of the dry tailings, covered with dry tailings, and
eventually submerged with new, wet tailings. Only industrial waste was observed. At the Smelter
landfill, the waste is a mix of industrial and office waste. The working face is of reasonable size and covered regularly. No windblown litter is visible in the area in or outside the facility. A scheduled inspection of the tire monofill was cancelled at the last minute due to a haul truck on fire on the access road at the mine. The monofill site was discussed with the senior environmental advisor for the facility,
who sent a picture taken two days prior of the trench with disposed tires. The monofill appears to be
clean and well operated. We appreciate your efforts to operate the landfills in compliance with current regulations. If you have questions, please call Phil Burns at (801) 536-0253.
Sincerely, Scott T. Anderson, Director
Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (Over)
