FACILITY DESCRIPTION:
Smith Farms has a Plan of Operation to apply food byproducts via landspreading on fields it owns in near Fairfield, Utah
(see Google Map attachment). CARNE I Corp. has previously been contracted by Smith Farms to prepare the Plan of
Operation application and to coordinate delivery of food byproducts to Smith Farms fields. The fields are currently not in
production.
CREDENTIALS, PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Patrick Sheehan met with and presented credentials to Brett Dayley of CARNE I Corp. The purpose of the inspection was
to conduct an inspection of Smith Farms.
MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES AND OBSERVATIONS:
Smith Farms is located approximately 2 miles north of Fielding, Utah on Highway 73, near mile post 23. There are
several farm buildings with equipment at this location. However, food byproducts are applied to the fields just northeast
of the buildings - access is via dirt road, and has a "Cedar Fort" sign at the turn off. The farm fields were generally dry
and had not had any land application of food byproduct recently.
SUMMARY:
The inspection revealed no issues related to land application of food byproducts, as no food byproducts have been applied
recently. Brett Dayley stated that the facility occasionally receives food byproducts from Dannon Yogurt. The farm is
located in a rural setting of Utah County, although urban sprawl is encroaching several miles to the northeast. Food
byproduct application may become an issue once urban sprawl encroaches this area.
