P.O. Box 36 Kanab, Utah 84741 RE: Compliance Evaluation Inspection
Kanab Sanitary Landfill
Dear Mr. Little: On April 17, 2018, a representative of the Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control
conducted an inspection at the Kanab Sanitary Landfill. We appreciate the assistance offered during the
inspection. The area for disposal has improved because it has been reduced to a more confined area. The working face, however, was much broader in width than the actual (confined) area for disposal. The working
face should be reduced in size to reflect the same width as the confined area used for disposal. Areas
outside of the active area should be covered with soil. This action will then reduce the width of the working face and prevent exposure to blowing litter. Soil cover should be applied to solid waste on the whole working face at the end of each day of operation as this will also reduce the potential for blowing litter.
The waste tires on the south end of the site and the recycled metal pile near the active disposal area appeared to be in good managed order. Soil surface drainage and erosion control appeared to be satisfactory. As future disposal cells enlarge, all side slopes cannot be greater than a 3:1 (three feet horizontal and one foot vertical) unless an alternative slope design has been approved. Slopes should be regularly inspected to ensure water run-off is controlled and erosion channels are regularly repaired.
Site inspections were routinely done but are not always recorded. Please ensure that every load of solid waste that comes into the landfill is recorded in tons or cubic yards as well as type of material. The landfill site inspections should be done at least quarterly. A record of training should also be kept.

To best optimize the future landfill air space at the Kanab Landfill property, we encourage the Western
Kane County Special Service District Board to consider creating a master plan. If you have any questions, please call Matt Sullivan at (801) 536-0241.
Sincerely,
Scott T. Anderson, Director
Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control
