Foothill Water Users Association water may be contaminated with E. coli or other bacteria.
BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING
What happened?
Firstly, the low-pressure situation due to the well being replaced has increased the likelihood of bacterial
and E-coli contamination of the water.
Secondly, due to several bacterial tests coming back positive due to the deterioration and open holes in
the water storage tank, this advisory has been suggested to be issued so that all residents understand the
potential risk of the current water. These holes mean that the tank is very likely to get contaminated if it
isn’t already.
What is being done?
Foothills Water Users Association is continuing the work in progressing the grant/loan that we have been
given from the Division of Drinking water. One priority as part of this work is to replace the tank and
ensure safe drinking water for the community. In addition to that there has been work done on the well to
fix the issue and get water pumping again.
What is the water contaminated by?
• Routine testing has not indicated that the system has been contaminated by E. coli, however due
to the damaged nature of the tank it has a high chance of becoming contaminated at some point in
the future.
• The system has tested positive for Coliform twice in the last 12 months. Coliform is an indicator
bacteria that shows that there is contamination within the water system. While some coliforms are
harmless it is an indication of an underlying issue which is the tank in this case. Due to this we
are issuing this Boil Order Advisory to highlight the dangers of the water currently supplied by
the system.
What should the consumer do?
● DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil,
let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water
should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation
until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
● E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or
animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or
other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the
elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems.
● The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any
of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased
risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
The Utah Division of Drinking Water recommends households and businesses take the following actions:
● Flush (run) every cold and hot water tap used for drinking water or bathing for 3-5 minutes.
● Empty any water in appliance service lines.
● Discard any ice in refrigerators and water used for pets.
● After flushing, please report any objectionable taste, odors, or discoloration in the drinking water
to the city.

General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe
Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791 Division website: drinkingwater.utah.gov.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who
may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes,
schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing
