On September 20th at approximately 5:30 PM, the Water Operator for the Big Plains (BP) Water District received a phone call from a local resident indicating that they had no water. The Water Operator responded and found the pumps for 2 wells were running but not pumping any water. Further inspection indicated that the million-gallon tank that serves the area was empty and the float on the tank was stuck and reading an incorrect water level. Early investigation shows that seismic activity or drilling may have caused a hole in the Moenkopi layer of the Aquifer. This allows water to drain from the aquifer layer from which our wells draw water. There are approximately 170 homes without water service from this event. This led to a loss of pressure in the distribution system, which may cause backpressure, backsiphonage, or movement of water from outside the pipe to the inside through cracks, breaks, or joints in the distribution systemthat are common in all water systems. Such a system failure carries with it a high potential that fecal contamination or other disease-causing organisms could enter the distribution system. These conditions may pose an imminent and substantial health endangerment to persons served by thesystem. What is being done? The Big Plains Water Board is currently working to truck water into the area. We have a neighboring city (St. George) trucking in potable/culinary water. We are also trucking in non-potable water that may be used for flushing toilets and other non-potable needs. Residents may bring water buckets and containers to be filled at the roundabout entrance into Cedar Point subdivision. Those with RV’s may fill up their RV water storage tanks at the Apple Valley Town Hall (1777 N Meadowlark Dr.) There will be another truck available to bring water to your home for animals. If you need assistance getting water to your home, please contact the district offices. Please utilize other potable means of bringing water to your home. Purchasing water from the store or using the natural spring water that is approved for drinking at different locations in Hildale. Please be aware of how this might affect your home. Be sure to turn off water heaters and other appliances that might be affected by the lack of water. The Big Plains Board is working tirelessly to bring water to the area with the assistance of the Town of Apple Valley. We encourage neighbors to check on neighbors and make sure everyone is well cared for. We are grateful to those who have already volunteered to assist in any way. What should I do?DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a rolling boil for at least (3) three minutes, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. ALL STORED WATER, DRINK OR ICE MADE RECENTLY FROM THIS SUPPLY SHALL BEDISCARDED.Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites which can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromisedimmune systems. The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health careproviders.
