Dear Mr. Dodson:
The Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (Division) has reviewed your request dated May 2, 2024, fora deadline extension of December 31, 2024, to submita revised Western
Zirconium Remediation Work Plan – AOC 15 and SWMU 18 (Work Plan).
The Division provided comments dated January 29,2024 and April 2, 2024, related to risk assessment analysis, confirmation sampling, and additional information required for an ecological
risk assessment waiver. In response, Western Zirconium will update the risk-based clean up levels for AOC-15 and SWMU-18, which will involve conducting a risk assessment to help determine
the scope of work in the Work Plan. In addition Western Zirconium will provide additional information about areas adjacent to AOC-15 that may be contaminated, and that could provide
habitat. These areas adjacent to AOC-15 must be evaluated for appropriateness of an ecological waiver based on the individual species present and the locality of the site. Once the
risks are reevaluated for AOC-15, SWMU-18, and adjacent areas, the Work Plan will be revised and submitted to the Division.
The extension is justified, based on the need for additional information to complete the Work Plan revisions, and is hereby approved. The new deadline will be December 31, 2024.
