Description and cause of spill: Hydraulic hose from pump drive broke on overburden
drill 1822 while drilling overburden blast holes. Resulting in approximately 55 gallons of
hydraulic oil spilling to the ground in pit 116 on the drill pad.
Cleanup and control action taken: Captured as much oil as possible, repaired the drill
so it could be moved and the cleanup started. Contained spilled oil and cleaned up
contaminated soil with a backhoe. The Petroleum-contaminated soil was placed in the
storage truck bed in the laydown yard for later disposal at the Uintah County landfill.
Effectiveness of cleanup operations: All the petroleum-contaminated soil was collected
and hauled to the contaminated soil storage. The spill area was totally cleaned up. The
petroleum-contaminated soil is stored until the storage area fills, at which time we obtain
a permit from TriCounty Health and haul the petroleum-contaminated soil to the Uintah
County landfill for permanent disposal.
